The Venn diagram of people who dislike referring to fellow humans by their preferred pronouns and people who anthropomorphize a piece of code should not have this much overlap, yet here we are.

@astro_jcm@mastodon.online Not just anthropomorphize, but assign gender to!

@astro_jcm I don't think it's that surprising. Those on the first group are usually white dudes that think that everything that's not a white dude is inferior to them, so it seems to me it's not that strange that they consider all those new things they do not understand belong to the set of old things they never understood, such as being something different from a white dude. In fact, that particular white dude you're referring to assigned a female pronoun to that particular piece of code...

  • @astro_jcm It makes more sense when you realize their philosophy is consistent, it’s just not the expected “golden rule of “treat others the way you want them to treat you”, but instead that they extend respect and empathy to those that they already care about; that is, those that don’t challenge, disagree, confuse, or anger them by merely existing outside of cultural norms. You are assigned personhood upon proving value, not as a base characteristic.

@astro_jcm I make it a practice to only anthropomorphize code when it's acting hostile.

@astro_jcm "How am I supposed to remember what name someone told me they wanted to be called?" "Um, actually, it's not ChatGPT. Her name is Sloppifer and we're in love."
