The 1970s oil crises famously led the Dutch to develop their cycling network. The French went for high speed rail. Australia went back to doing things exactly as before.
The instincts of our political class have not changed. If we want to change direction we'll have to drag them kicking & screaming.

@BenLeverAU@aus.social @aj@gts.sadauskas.id.au If Australia were a country that did long-term planning, this would have spurred states to electrify the busiest diesel railways (reducing fossil dependency, and plugging into abundant renewables), rather than short-term deficit spending on free public transport until the next election, and then ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. (Looking at you, Victoria.) Electrifying lines to outer-suburban growth areas should be a level-crossing-removal-tier priority project, followed by popular regional lines.
