PSA: Don't split your butt! For #MastoDaoine and others expecting sub-zero (Celsius) temperatures in the next few days: if you have a plastic rainwater butt, partially drain it whilst you can. Most butts are straight (cylindrical) in their mid section but taper at the top and bottom. If the tapered section at the top is even partially full and the contents freeze, the ice will expand and push upwards, which can split the butt. Drain it down to about two-thirds full, so the level is partway down the straight middle bit. Then if the contents freeze and expand upwards they can do so without causing damage. No ifs or butts.
