  @oli@olifant.social @johnzajac@dice.camp The idea of "change is never the safest bet" comes into play. Setting fires is inherently risky. It's especially so when you're potentially putting an entire society to the torch, even if that's just the remnants of what you may have once thought was the society you were living in. There's a strong tendency to linger on and cling to "but I still have enough stuff that I could lose than I'm willing to risk for the rewards I'm personally likely to realize". It's really only once enough people reach the "spending the rest of my life in jail is unlikely to be appreciably worse than my current life" that you start to see things like medical-insurance executives being gunned down and/or warehouses being put to the torch. And it's only when there's a critical-mass of those things that either those at the top change course or enough of the population concludes "lets have our own Bastille Day". Right now, it feels like we're entering the early days of the violence that came with the prior gilded age. With luck, we only have to go through that level of violence and not a full on "get out the guillotines" or "October Revolution" type of bloody event.
