@drakonic in the wider context of "learning to draw" the attitude of "you must do still-life drawing, 3-point perspective, values and colour before you do manga-style" is absolutely pervasive and is what got me to quit visual art a decade ago when "well meaning" bystanders kept shitting on my progress pics because I wasn't drawing 300 boxes a day instead. I see this continuously given as "advice" to random people on reddit as well. the fact is, all that stuff is necessary, yes, but all of it can be done *later*. let people doodle if that's what they want to do. instilling an idea that you're "learning the wrong way" kills people's motivations. my first PCBs sucked ass and the very first one didn't even work. but I got better and better with each one. somehow, I did so without learning analogue impedance formulas from a textbook first.

@drakonic@wetdry.world @AmyZenunim@unstable.systems I could maybe see someone interpreting "I wouldn't start with specifically manga" as saying that they don't think Manga in particular is a good place to start even relative to other areas of art (i.e. calling Manga complex or bad for learning) Also, admittedly, I can definitely see someone interpreting a full-on "Learn to draw book" as being a bunch of boring and tedious tasks, like the workbooks you might have in school.

@drakonic @AmyZenunim They're not denigrating it per se, but, notice the reaction of the OP, how being told to instead of doing whats fun to them, their reason for starting, to do the thing that is extremely helpful for proper artisanship. Notice the disappointment. A statement of "do it, do it badly", "you may feel bad about your art, thats okay, feel, and continue regardless", "here are some resources on manga specifically" and "if you have trouble or want to improve your artisanship go check out these more general resources" should be more helpful for getting someone into art.
