@jab01701mid look, after having gone through this exercise, I believe I get where you're coming from, really (the Windows plug-and-play infrastructure definitely vibes as being designed for your model, and trying to convince Windows to even tell you about "every WinUSB device" requires a ton of workarounds) the problem is that "worse is better" approaches *are* currently winning, so I feel it's worthwhile to explore _why_ that is (just to start with, how many users still understand the concept of installing software? how many developers understand how to write native applications?)

@r Fair enough, but asking a "user" to install a plugin is installing software. And now they are conditioned to "install browser extensions" possibly of ill repute. I'll also push back on "how many developers understand how to write native applications". What kind of "developers" are you referring to ? Webapp programmers ? I've written BIOS code and DOS Extenders and webapps. I think "developers" can figure out how to write a native app that does not require a browser plugin, without AI.
