@jab01701mid that's more-or-less precisely how this works (except it uses the WebExtensions "native messaging" capacity, which can be safer than using a localhost HTTP connection)

@jab01701mid look, after having gone through this exercise, I believe I get where you're coming from, really (the Windows plug-and-play infrastructure definitely vibes as being designed for your model, and trying to convince Windows to even tell you about "every WinUSB device" requires a ton of workarounds) the problem is that "worse is better" approaches *are* currently winning, so I feel it's worthwhile to explore _why_ that is (just to start with, how many users still understand the concept of installing software? how many developers understand how to write native applications?)
