The truth is that if a ship is running smoothly, it's not just because its captain is handing good orders down from above. There's always someone standing at the opposite end from him, running things from below. He's the resident expert in how commands translate into action. He knows what procedures need to stay in place and which can be tweaked without upsetting things too much. He's often on the older side, but his official rank rarely reflects his level of experience. He may have seen several captains come and go already. It's always the captain's job to make things go right. It's his job to make sure nothing goes wrong. As a result he's never showered with praise—but if he was interested in that he'd have gunned for captain. It was never his style to seek the limelight.
