I'll probably be less active here today because I'm trying to finish a blog post where I pour all my hate for #Google's decade-long history of attacks to the #openWeb and #indieWeb and it's taking way longer than I expected. EDIT: you can now read it here https://wok.oblomov.eu/tecnologia/google-killing-open-web/ and now I'm going to go over a full day of backlog here on‌ Fedi 8-D

BTW @doriantaylor@mastodon.social would it be OK if I put a properly-attributed copy of your first comment to the XSLT removal proposal from Github? It's really powerful and I'd prefer it if people could read it without having to get there (are GH issues even accessible without a GH account these days?)

And it's done https://wok.oblomov.eu/tecnologia/google-killing-open-web/ If you spot any errors (e.g. in my recall of history) do let me know. If you know of additional additional (direct or by proxy) examples of the war of Google on XML, RSS and/or XSLT do let me know. If you know of more interesting use cases for XSLT, do let me know. Also, I'll probably add a post-scriptum in the coming hours or days, but I wanted to get this out now. #Google #openWeb #indieWeb #XML #XSLT #selfHosting #RSS and many others

  • @oblomov@sociale.network Annoying i know but the Disney song ' Let it go, let it go' rings in my ears everytime I get those feelings. - Hate isnt productive.. Annoyingly there was a quote by an Eastern European thinker (whos name I cant remember ) pre 1989 that went something like - Just imagine and act like you live in a free society and expect others to as well ..if enought of us do that then we will - Use the open web, expect others to use it, act surprised if someone doesnt - Live your life and let go of the frustration.

  • @oblomov@sociale.network Oh I know XSLTs ... (I was learning about them back in 2000 ) - I'm just saying that focusing on the bad (and the history) doesn't give people a positive view of an alternative positive way of how they could live their life - It just leaves people feeling stuck. I really wish I could find that quote but basically its about doing the doing of living a good life. - As I think you have done in your post - rather than focusing on the bad that went before it. Your "Make yourself be seen" section at the end is really positive - I'd put that at the top along with the stuff about how cool XSLTs can be. But you are blogging and creating content and discussing things. Thats cool and positive and what we should be doing more of so that's all good.

@oblomov@sociale.network It was probably a forgotten footnote, but MarkLogic where I worked for 7 years was caught in these throes, bad. I worked with XQuery for that entire time and consider it an XSLT that is actually fun. But it felt like a sinking ship amidst all the XML hate and our company spent soooo much effort trying to convince folks that documents are documents, trees are trees and JSON is fine... Talk to XML hero @ndw@toot.wales for definitive timeline of all things XSLT.
