I checked a torrent I uploaded in Nyaa years ago: it has more seeders than the original translation I based on. Sure, I improved upon the original translation in some ways, but I have to consider something really important: Maybe the first time people are watching this anime is no longer the old subjectively bad translation, but the one I made. Not that I think "wow, I made history", it's a terrible anime, I just fixed typesetting, added a second language track, added some fansubber jokes and made it work more like the original DVD rather than a butchered rip from someone with little ripping knowledge. But I still like that it might be the case.
