  @thelastpsion@oldbytes.space I don't think many people understand this or that it's true of virtually everything that we do that actually takes creativity. You code, you're going to spend years coding badly before you become elegant. You play musical instruments, you're going to play badly and practice a lot to get mediocre. But after you practice being mediocre long enough, you suddenly discover that you've actually gotten pretty good. It just takes a long time. If you're a sculptor, you're liable to make an awful lot of junk and paperweights and door stops, no matter what it was you intended to make, until something clicks, and it's suddenly not door stops anymore. It's like that actor that's an overnight success after only 40 years of trying. All through those 40 years they were getting better in learning and being seen by people until they became unforgettable. That was their art. And that's how long it took. And don't get me started on how many brilliant, imaginative, creative writers with all the potential in the world are waiting tables and selling cars because they have to eat. If only someone was there to tell us not to stop creating just to survive, we can do both.
