@KentNavalesi one of the criticisms of the western education system is the emphasis on production. What if instead of producing essays, learning was done through conversation, in peer groups, long-term pair learning, and in conversation with teachers, in addition to lectures where the students' role is to ask (rather than answer) difficult questions?

@alter_kaker @nholzschuch I don't think one can learn to structure thoughts and arguments without having some product in mind. US college instructors did start prioritizing conversational modes about 15 years ago when students' writing abilities started precipitously declining. In general I don't think that approach has produced better thinkers.

@alter_kaker Why do software guys seem to think they can just propose easy fixes for education, as if longtime educators haven't already explored such fixes?
