I don't think one can learn to structure thoughts and arguments without having some product in mind. US college instructors did start prioritizing conversational modes about 15 years ago when students' writing abilities started precipitously declining. In general I don't think that approach has produced better thinkers.

@KentNavalesi other educational traditions have done so for thousands of years, not as a mitigation, but because it's what was right for them, and have produced quite good thinkers, but of course we should all do our respective things. @nholzschuch
