People rent cars to do it, which just blows my mind. I don't get how they can be making any money at all.

A lot of gig workers just treat it like a paycheck and don't compare revenue to expenses like the independent business it really is. Edit: poor wording, I don't believe it's entirely an independent business but that is how they are paid.

Wouldn't renting be the ultimate way to know if it was profitable as there's no hidden costs? No insurance, no depreciation, no maintenance, no repairs. You do a shift and whatever you make you make.
