    I figure @paul is across this, but for the rest of the crowd: With “enterprise” standards, if you pay for a seat you can add a MAY here and there and downgrade an inconvenient MUST to SHOULD. As a result, your customers can’t guarantee any compliant implementation will work with another. If vendor support matters to them, they have to choose from your compatibility list. It’s standard, but they’re still locked in. Fibre Channel was a classic example.

    @garthk ah, I immediately thought of this article when I read @paul‘s post. I wouldn’t have remembered the title or author in order to find it again, but recognised the writing in the first paragraph.
