@aworkinglibrary This is absolutely true, and I am fortunate to know that from personal experience despite having spent nearly thirty years identifying with work to the extent that I couldn't *imagine* not working until nearly the very end.
My partner used to tell me to take a six-month sabbatical, and for years I didn't even try to make it work because it just didn't seem possible. Then I went on a one-month "working vacation" road trip, full of plans for things to work on… and I just… didn't do them. And it was great! And I was fine!
Now, having stopped working a couple of years ago, I had absolutely none of the regrets I once imagined, in terms of not working any more. I don't sit around wondering what's going on at my ex-workplace, or stalking my old projects. It was like flipping a switch, and I was fine!
Now I look back and find it hard to understand how I couldn't see how unhealthy and wasteful those decades were, in terms of what I valued in my life.
