I remember being explicitly taught some of this as a leader of some small group discussions many years ago: If somebody dominates the conversation one week, sit right beside them the next, so they don't get any eye contact to encourage them. If somebody never speaks, sit across from them so they feel like you're gently inviting them to speak.
