By default, Debian keeps the previous version of a kernel so it can be re-selected at boot, so you might not be totally borked.

@vollink Hopefully you're right, the only issue is I've gone through several rounds of apt-get dist-upgrade hoping that the next update will fix the issue and build a kernel, so depending on how Debian determines a kernel is "the previous version", it might not be enough.
