@danluu curious how this is impressive. Haven’t machines been beating the best humans at games for decades now? Deep Blue beat Kasparov 29 years ago and DeepMind beat Fan Hui at AlphaGo 10 years ago, the same year OpenAi was founded.

@danluu @ianmastodon AlphaGo and Deep Blue had major research teams with lots of PhDs in AI, building algorithms for those specific games. Estimates for AlphaGo Zero are something like $35 million. The change is that someone with no AI background is able to do this cheaply and easily in a few days.
