@danluu @ianmastodon AlphaGo and Deep Blue had major research teams with lots of PhDs in AI, building algorithms for those specific games. Estimates for AlphaGo Zero are something like $35 million. The change is that someone with no AI background is able to do this cheaply and easily in a few days.
