    TL;DR and press: https://www.earth.org.uk/To-Zone-Or-Not-To-Zone-with-TRVs-for-Retrofit-Heat-Pumps.html

  • @DamonHD@mastodon.social TRV (Thermostatic radiator valve) is a super interesting topic when switching from #gas to #heatpump! I've learned that in contrast to a gas heated home, a well insulated heat pump powered system acts as an inert system, where it is efficient to have a small heat pump constantly running. Ideally, flow temperature is minimized. This means that on a cold day the home gets warm enough when all valves are 100% opened, while the return temperature should have a proper drop. Ideally, without a buffer tank. Better: replace individual radiators (or if it's not possible: increase heat dissipation via small fans) and of course reduce heat flow (insulation, windows, ...). If this is given, then I am also convinced that some money will be saved by setting the valve a little bit lower in unused rooms. Closing the valve too much or for too many rooms could impact the defrosting cycle and harm the efficiency of the whole system (-> costs money). #wärmepumpe #heizungswende #energiewende #climate #heatpumps

@DamonHD@mastodon.social Thanks for openly publishing this. I hope it didn't cost your institution too much to bribe the gatekeeper.

@DamonHD@mastodon.social I've often wondered about this (as someone with a technical background, but outside the industry): the best approach with zoning, TRVs, and [side topic] are various related industries failing to innovate and just accept the inefficient status quo to let the consumers keep burning gas?
