My plan this week was to finish a book from the library. Instead I spent it editing transcripts. Necessary but, wow that’s a slow process. #phdlife

In local elections in the UK the Electoral Comission says: “In the event of a tie, then a candidate is selected by the drawing of lots (i.e., a method of selection by chance such as tossing a coin or picking a name out of a hat).” I’m sorry. What!? First past the post is a dreadful system. #ukpolitics #elections #fpp https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/news-and-views/media-centre/local-elections-england-2026-media-guide

On Friday I talked about art and the suitability of colour choices in a lighting design. Then I went and swapped out a broken #Strand LD90 control module so that one of our theatres could keep up and running with a complete power control system. This is what we mean when we say the intersection of art and technology. #lightingdesign #theatre

Another interview for the #phd today. I knew these would be interesting but I hadn’t clocked how much fun I’d have. Turns out talking to interesting people about a topic you love is really fun. #phdlife

Having a migraine is weird. I can sometimes focus for short bursts. So over the last few days I have read some articles for my #phd. But at the same time I only managed to leave the house for the first time in 10 days today. #spoonie #phdlife

I keep seeing placements for #phd researchers to go on placements for ~3 months. They sound like exciting things, particularly for researchers new to the jobs market. Although not for me, I keep getting struck by the number that offer no fee. While if it’s part of a course for taught programmes, or contributing to research, that’s fine. But blanket “come work for us for three months cause we are great” — that seems incredibly financially discriminatory. #AcademicChatter #UniversityOfYork #UCU @...

If you have #migraine and cold or cool can help, may I recommend a migraine beanie. Discovered this two days ago and it’s incredible. Already bought a second one to keep at work. Available from your local international monopoly. https://amzn.eu/d/0hF2WHSe #spoonie #chronicPain

My university wasn’t listed in @ResearchOrgs@mastodon.social and guess what, proposing the addition was simple. If an org you know has a mistake or is missing take the 5 minutes to suggest a change.
