Folks arriving here from BSky might be wondering how to find folks without an algorithm, and I usually see people talking about boosts and hashtags, but here's what worked for me: Find some cool looking folks. This is the hard part, but if you don't already know anyone on fedi, you can try to local and federated feeds, or look at accounts like @lisamelton or @yassie_j or anyone else you see people saying will bring their server down by boosting them. Here's the secret sauce: look at who they reply to. "Friends of friends" has been the most reliable discovery mechanism in my experience. You can also look at what they're boosting, if you'd rather go by their taste than assume you'll like the people they like. Also, some folks are weird as fuck here. Definitely follow them. The weirder the better. Trust me, those rent-lowering creatures are the most genuine folks on fedi.
