@Printdevil @Taskerland @devilsjunkshop When I was in college, for one class on the history of Speakers of the House we read and wrote about the fall of Jim Wright and I was pretty unstinting in my criticism of Newt Gingrich’s role. My professor, a former R Congressman (‘69-‘82), gave the essay back with a note “You should know that I consider Newt a personal friend. Nonetheless, your paper is well written and your arguments are logical and well supported. A+” That’s my ideal academic approach.

That should be a basic expectation of a teaching academic in any contentious field. The fact we feel we should laud it when it happens is awful. @pooserville @Taskerland @devilsjunkshop
