Last night the bonfires would've been lit back in my old home country, for the Valborg celebrations. Or "Valborgsmässoafton" to use its full contemporary name - Valborg's mass eve. Aside from missing it, being on the southern hemisphere and all, it always gets me riled up over Christinanity's usurpation of the holiday. The official story is that it's came from Germany's Walpurgisnacht in the 1400s, the honouring of saint Walpurgis. Never mind how it falls on Beltaine, how Old Norse and Old English were lately interchangeable with frequent movement of people between britain and scandinavia. You cannot tell me this is a Christian holiday. I think what makes me the most sad is how its original name and meaning has been erased from the communal memory.
