Btw, this could be a use-case for the [`umsdos` filesystem](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FAT_filesystem_and_Linux#umsdos_2), which supports Unix-specific features over a regular FAT filesystem. Iirc you could create it in a subdirectory of the FAT disk. However, it was made long ago, in the days of DOS and Windows 9x, and I'm not sure it's even available anymore, or that it would work over exFAT. Doesn't seem to be there by default in Mint or in its repository.
