When the centre-left controlled social media, people used to say, “Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequences”, meaning private speech could be suppressed. All well and good when corporations were banning fascists, but now they’re on the side of fascists.
What we should have said was, “Yes, FoS should exist, at least in spirit, even online, even in privately owned spaces, but threats and hate still don’t count”.
