What I understand is that dark matter would explain a number of observations, including the Einstein rings around galaxy clusters, the reason that galaxy clusters don't move apart given their velocities, and the rotational speeds of stars in clusters.
If there are some exotic particles making up dark matter, they interact only through gravity, else they would radiate something.
Other ideas seem to not be able to explain all observed effects.
