@Alison in the UK if you have no other income you get what is called universal credit but it is enough to feed you and nothing else. However, you can also claim what they call housing benefit and that pays your rent. So you won’t be on the street, but you won’t be able to afford to cook, heat your house or clothe yourself. Of course these payments are not automatic. They are predicated on your spending every waking hour looking for work. Which completely destroys your self-esteem
