@jeffm hi friend! 👋 Hope you're well! 💙 Let me rubber duck with you in the open on this modern market strawperson. 🚫 User exists with no online presence, inclusive of any DNS zones. 📖 Without relying on another provider, they must host their own auth DNS online to serve their zone to the Internet. 🛜 That zone in DNS is now live on some IPv4. But not delegated to in any way. 📝 They want to register that zone with a registrar. ✋ Most registrars user flows expect DNS servers in the form of qualified RRs during registration. They input barf on IPv4 (makes sense, whois has records in domains). 👀 It's semi laborious to setup at Namecheap via https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/768/10/how-do-i-register-personal-nameservers-for-my-domain/. This might be interactive only (eg no API). I got curious if other registrars make this available and/or make it as challenging to setup. Or if ICANN governs this behavior deeper than the delegation glues provide. 🤔 Thanks for letting me talk it out. ✌️
