"Their transparency report says they reject all such requests implying they receive some. No number is given." That's kind of the point. That implication is deliberately misleading. Kash Patel aside, the FBI aren't utter morons. They're not "barred" from making direct requests; they're just not stupid enough to do so. They're smart enough to send everything through the MLAT, like they're supposed to, and get everything they want with zero pushback. "No number is given." Yeah. Think about that for a moment. If Proton could truthfully say, "We denied 5000 requests from the FBI last year," wouldn't that be great marketing? Wouldn't they have every incentive to publish that number? Or even 500? Or even 50? Or, really, any number greater than, well... zero?
