@futuresprog yeah I just read that. Even if he is only half right, or a little bit right, I think the rest of the year is going to be way rockier than our opinion-column class have realised. Except god help me for Matthew Hooton, I hate it when I agree with Hooton.

  • I don’t know if I agree with Hooton because I don’t read Hooton. Is he being paid by a survivalist bunker company now? Nat Geo guy makes a lot of good points and they’re long term points where even if he turns out to be wrong we will be in a better place. Short term fixes such as fuel subsidies or hoarding fuel will leave us in a worse place but starting a permaculture garden or meeting the neighbours will leave us better off forever. Even if he’s wrong he’s still right. @stephen

@stephen @futuresprog Yes, I agree with him on his assessment. Our current approach is really tantamount to irresponsibly having our heads in the sand, and relying on "thoughts and prayers" alone to get us out of a bind. Australia's leadership at least recognizes and is willing to publicly acknowledge the risk, and have taken measures. Then again, we are talking about the bunch of idiots who canceled the IREX ferries, and are likely away with the fairies right now thinking about internal turf battles to roll their leader and take the crown themselves... We really should've moved up that fuel scale ages ago, AND started things that would ration fuel so that we build up a larger buffer of reserves on shore. I mean, what's the worst that can happen from increasing our strategic reserves and the crisis then ending earlier? Meh... a little reduced productivity and "diminished economic efficiency" in a way that would make all those Just-In-Time MBA mmorons cry buckets... unless you're telling me that actually, we don't even have the physical capacity to actually store more reserves than the "just enough" we currently maintain! 😬
