Now remembering something my college English professor said about historical plays; short version, tragedies endure because they're more universal than comedies, which tend to be topical. You've got to be in on the joke for it to land best. And maybe that's how it should be, because without the context there's a greater danger than just not "getting it".
Or, I don't know, maybe we could actually teach history.
