@archo @ikuturso @chaucerburnt @sinbad I’m not a researcher into consciousness, but I find it a fascinating subject. I did cognitive psychology in the 1990s.. and there’s been a lot of advances since then. Connectivist ideas in AI have always interested me, and large LLMs behave in very interesting ways that mirror neuroscience findings.. unsurprisingly since they imitate its low level structure. The big question is how low level structure gives rise to high level intelligence.

  • @frankreiff @ikuturso @chaucerburnt @sinbad LLMs definitely don't imitate any natural structures at any level, as AFAIK there's no equivalent to floating point values, tokens or positional encoding etc. and I'm not sure it is necessarily sufficient for intelligence to only have a brain - I'm not aware of any creature that has become smart by existing as a disembodied brain so there isn't really much reason to assume the contribution of all the surrounding structures isn't relevant enough
