Meshtastic iOS app breaks EU law with sending lots of telemetry (logs, usage) to DataDog in US wthout user consent and without any kind of notification of the app doing so. I reported this as issue and it got immediately closed without any explanation: https://github.com/meshtastic/Meshtastic-Apple/issues/1449 #meshtastic #gdpr #datadog

@OH3CUF@mastodon.radio When I check in the App Store they claim they handle data 'not linked to you'. Their privacy policy states they do not collect any personal identifying information. I have not delved further but if you see personal data being moved without consent or warning then I'd complain to Apple and Meshtastic LLC directly.

how much meshtastic data are they scooping up? Are they sending info about current nodes/locations and messages send to the public channel? Or is this just grabbing data from the iOS device itself? My reason for asking is... Should we be discarding meshtastic altogether or is this just a problem of needing a better app on iOS... Is this the official meshtastic app? Because that is some sketchy behavior. I really want to believe in meshtastic... Even thought about getting a t-deck a few times... Probably won't now.

@OH3CUF@mastodon.radio This does not violate EU law. However, I agree that we could do a better job making users aware, and giving them an easier way to opt out. I've added issues to the apps asking for exactly this.

@OH3CUF@mastodon.radio Kids, don't use Meshtastic. There are alternatives that are better from a technical standpoint *and* they're not in bed with fascists.

  • @OH3CUF@mastodon.radio If you created that as an actual issue, it shows up as "This issue was deleted"... That's even shittier than "closed without any explanation" in my mind. Thanks for sharing.
