What a time to be alive: "For gaming, Microsoft views steamOS as the benchmark, and is working to optimize the platform so that steamOS and Windows gaming performance are comparable." So they're trying to make Windows beat Linux at running... Windows games. https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows-11/what-is-windows-k2-everything-you-need-to-know-saving-windows-11

@berto Ahahaha, funny how quickly they can back-pedal on their fundamental values such as corporate shitfuckery when there's suddenly a non-enshittified competitor with >5% market share. Even normies are considering to switch to Linux because of how incredibly shite they made Windows..

@berto I hope with Windows Update they'll target Void's XBPS speed for benchmarking xd

@berto I suppose it's called K2 instead of Everest because they're just trying to stay in second place but know it's going to be incredibly hard?

@berto I guess we've been living in the Year of Linux on the Desktop for years, and we didn't even know it?

@berto inb4 MS moves the entire graphics subsystem back into kernelspace again It would increase performance, but it'll make Windows more unstable. Just like the last time they did this back in Windows NT 4.

@berto reminds me a few years ago (well ~2001) I discovered #freebsd at work. It ran linux version of Netscape Navigator better than Linux was. Under Linux it crashed on a regular basis, the same binary running on FreeBSD almost never crashed.

  • @berto K2 will be just as successful as K1 was. Actually, I'm amazed how bad a platform has to get before they lose even a few percentage points and start to panic. MS will pretend to care, and everything will go back to the way it was. Our society has the attention span of a mosquito.

@berto And nowhere did it say they're not gonna vibecode all the new "better" components. best case that shit's gonna be a writeoff as they realize you cant deliver on promises like that, worst case it'll make things even worse.
