I also believe he meant well, he just went about it in an incredibly careless and credulous way

@nev AI is so seductive. As long as I use it for things I know nothing about (and don't bother to fact check) the answers are always so well written and informative. I remember back when Bing Chat would give references. When Bing was "hallucinating" the references would invariably either be AI generated pages or pages that didn't match what Bing asserted, sometimes both. And when Google's AI summary was still spreading disinfo about Bixonimania while its search results were calling it fake.
