@elih, the question is who develops open-source fonts? It's often a wealthy minority controlling the options. That’s not the future I hope for. Fortunately, there are still many independent, knowledgeable, skilled, and experienced entrepreneurs who design typefaces and develop fonts, and there is value in that. I insist, many fonts are affordable to a wide audience. Using free fonts and not paying for one is a personal choice, influenced by the value you place on each option.

@marsidesino anyone can make an open source font and attach an NFT or crypto coin to it. Empowering everyone without gatekeepers is one of the great things about permissionless public blockchains. I buy NFTs from artists all the time and would happily do the same for type design. I just find proprietary licensing awkward and unusable, so I don't want to support that model. I'm also trying to convince Google Fonts to move away from commissioning work and switch to usage based creator payments.
