@graue@social.coop this is a beautiful write up of Mastodon's social intelligence and how values based design makes the difference from the bird place. #nztwits

@graue@social.coop this was very interesting and I agree with all of it. I joined about five years ago, but I only came in a couple of times a year until earlier this year. It wasn't until the last couple of weeks that I really learned how to get the benefit of the interface. In particular searching by # has been great, and I found a lot of interesting users and content.

@graue@social.coop Thank you! 👏👍

@graue@social.coop That 'quoting a tweet instead of engaging directly' as performative is one of my biggest bugbears with how 'influencers' (or really anyone, but really 'them') interact with their followers on the bird site. But you put it far more eloquently than I could!

@graue@social.coop helpful post. Thank you. Still trying to get my head around the differences

@graue@social.coop great article! Thanks for sharing :) The only thing that we all shouldn't forget is that the Fediverse is more than Mastodon. It's the entirety of all servers and interconnected services that are able to communicate with each other. So #peertube, #pixelfed and many more are part of the Fediverse as well.

@graue@social.coop my first instinct was to try to quote tweet. 🫣

@graue@social.coop Thanks for that! I'm still at the clone aspect, cloning what I say there here, but hopefully thanks to clarifications like yours (and effort like setting up my own instance and migrating data there) I'll learn the proper way and leverage it fully.

One sentence that resonates with me a lot Returning to Twitter, I was shocked by the rudeness and hostility.

@graue@social.coop that’s a really good summary of the differences and advantages of Mastodon

@graue@social.coop thank you for this post! I’m new to Mastodon and really looking for a healthier social meadow where narcissism is (if not absent) at least discouraged.

@autiomaa@mastodon.social 2022-10-30 09:45
@graue@social.coop Really good point about the lack of post quotations. > "Mastodon’s design was steering me towards talking to people rather than pointing at them." Though maybe there could be similar syntax for visually having quote structure, similarly as with Markdown. It could clarify longer conversation threads a bit.

@graue@social.coop this pretty much maps to my thoughts, especially on quoting. It annoyed me at first but now I see the logic.

@arjen@idf.social 2022-10-30 10:04
@graue@social.coop nice post, I agree. I do wonder how these positions may change with growth of the community; not offering search may not be sufficient to keep the trolls away, for example, such that at some point the advantages for discovery may outweigh its disadvantages. Time will tell!

@graue@social.coop @milan@social.tchncs.de couldn’t agree more. That’s what I feel for so long time. That’s the core of „Design“, making something useful. Mastodon is designed for us.

@krnlg@mastodon.social 2022-10-30 11:10
@graue@social.coop Thanks for this, it's a good write-up and very interesting. It's certainly been on my mind a lot that Twitter's reduction of everything down to "engagement" isn't necessarily a great way to facilitate healthy discussion.

@chloetse@mastodon.social 2022-10-30 11:17
@graue@social.coop every point is so well made and thought provoking! I didn't realise so many of Twitter's key features create a breeding ground of toxicity! I will add to it another feature that I just discovered. You cannot start a toot with a one-word sentence. I tried to start this reply with "Wow." and the word just kept disappearing after I add a period and space after the word. I assume it's also another way of encouraging conversation.

@emmecola@mastodon.online 2022-10-30 11:21
@graue@social.coop I am still learning how to use Mastodon, I have to say what you wrote makes sense. However, I am still not convinced by the missing "quote" feature. On Twitter I use to post interesting links by quoting the original author's tweet (to give credit to him), and adding a short quote from the article itself. This will not be possible here 🤔

@graue@social.coop great blog post. I've never actually been on Twitter, but I came here from Facebook and I think almost everything you wrote applies to that as well. While I'm no longer "friends" with my actual real life friends here, I end up discovering a lot more relevant stuff for me. The Facebook algo mostly showed me ads or news articles one of my friends commented on, either agreeing or trashing it. There was basically no original content to follow anymore.

@petalweed@c.im 2022-10-30 11:32
@graue@social.coop Well I do feel that sometimes quote tweets hurt conversations, but sometimes it also enriches conversations. Could we compute how many percent of quote tweets hurt the conversations and how many enrich the conversations, then make decisions based on that?
-
@shauny@mastodon.social 2022-10-30 11:32
@graue@social.coop Great post. I only disagree about full text search though. I agree it stops people harassing, but it's also making it more difficult for me to easily fund like-minded people. Not everyone uses hashtags. I guess that's something they factored into their decision though.

@pollak@mastodon.social 2022-10-30 11:32
@graue@social.coop Thanks for writing this! I also (at first) missed these features but am only now realizing what you point out: these features exist on the Birdsite to accelerate interactions, particularly negative and unhealthy interactions, and promote "engagement" full of hostility and rudeness.

@th0r5t3n@mastodon.online 2022-10-30 11:41
@graue@social.coop I wonder if there is a reason I can't reach the discussions from the Search->News tab. I see the headlines and how many related discussions exist on mastodon, but I might want to see those discussions as well. I didn't figure out how, yet.

@graue@social.coop I agree with all your points. they are subtle differences but have a significant qualitative impact. more conversation, less score keeping.

@graue@social.coop Well put! I had some similar reactions, and folks here convinced me yesterday on the quote-tweet issue as well.

@nicholasjohn@scholar.social 2022-10-30 12:30

@graue@social.coop "The lack of profit motive enables thoughtful design." Guck mal, liebe @jasminakuhnke@mastodon.social, was Scott über den Unterschied von Twitter und Mastodon schreibt, ist interessant. Hier ist es weniger toxisch als drüben.

@graue@social.coop This is a great summary of why it feels better here, something I also didn't realize could be different with ostensibly the same interface when I started actively using Mastodon again last April.
