I'm willing to pay a small premium for the additional flexibility & lack of hassle.
What's particularly difficult about the JR East/West split?

@hugh@social.crablab.uk the regional ones are cheaper if you know you're e.g. staying in Tokyo for a week, but then you probably want a national one if you're going cross-country
