Editing the grub file to take quiet out didn't solve the problem of not being able to see what is going on. At this point, while I don't actually want Arch, I'm tempted to download an Arch ISO to see if that will at least install.

Ha. Ok. I have the Arch ISO downloading through Torrent but I read the install instructions and no thanks. Thus concludes my Manjaro attempts. I'm not ruling out other Arch-based distributions but I'm not that much of a masochist that I would put up with manually installing Arch (the only way to install Arch) in order to try to guess which part of the Manjaro boot fails.
