I really liked how this article goes into so much depth on the issue - the history, controversy, and multiple perspectives including the experiences of actual educators. But crucially they demolish the idea that there's some kind of happy middle ground or compromise between teaching styles. Learning to read is hard work for kids, yes, but avoiding the challenge instead of getting them to meet it, overcome it and become competent readers is not a solution Looking at pictures instead of the words is not reading. Neither is guessing or just reading the first letter of the word. Of course it isn't. Those ideas could *only* ever be distractions; how could we have ever imagined otherwise?
