Why did putting door keys into the lock upside down become a thing?

@ArtBrew@mastodon.art That kind of variation has been around for about as long as locks. Symmetrical keys have also been a thing for decades, though not so much in residential door locks. Different types of lock cylinder are usually mounted a certain way, I don't know why. I do think Euro profile cylinders are getting more common, and they're often mounted pins/teeth-down, and rentals like them because they're easier to rekey between tenants.
