@johnlehet @siderea But... Stegner is obviously wrong about this. In the PNW trees come back up everywhere. Ditto in the black soils belt of the South. I would be very surprised if they didn't come back in the Tidewater regions; swamp trees there of course. They don't come back easily in the Plains because the Plains isn't a forest biome. Where else could he have been thinking of?
