The problem is that they’d cause a paradox by killing him, destroying their timeline and causing them to never travel back so their attempts are doomed to fail.

Since they already tried and failed they had to go back in time so they could close the loop and prevent a paradox. The fun things about backwards time travel is that if it’s ever used then it already has been.

Because they know that in 200 years or so the planet Earth will be designated as an intergalactic ballroom for the trade federation talks. Most of humanity will be destroyed to make way for the pouring of the concrete.

No matter how this ends, he's going to leave the world a much worse place than before. No telling how this is all going to play out but some very very bad scenarios are definitely on the table.

In the future the new ballroom is really ugly and it makes a lot of people angry. So they have been trying to stop it by using time travel, witchcraft, waffle house, etc.
