the main motivation is mostly to get away from the google/microsoft environment.
So a place to store their photos and school work documents, and 'free' office suite.
also: email and calendar.

@Sassinake With Nextcloud move to a new office suite, this could be pretty huge. But also remember - there is a private video chat as well. If the kids have their own internet service, I suggest a weekly 'pizza event' with the cameras; maybe Sunday lunch or something. A great way to stay connected as family spreads wings. They also released Photos 2.0; haven't looked into it yet. Lots of things!
