It's impossible to implement privacy respecting age verification as @pluralistic describes here. #privacy #cdnpoli #Manitoba #mbpoli #surveillance #surveillancecapitaliism https://doctorow.medium.com/privacy-preserving-age-verification-is-bullshit-0aefd53019e0

@leftylabourtech @pluralistic Wab, normally a genius, lost the thread on this one. Biggest issue is that it's clear very few polis have thought this one through. Locking kids out of online services is not a solution - it's a dereliction of duty that normalizes the algorithms and protects the platforms. Most shockingly for the NDP it that it's ultimately a free-market solution that gives more power to foreign corporate platforms in terms of collecting and handling Canadians' private data. It puts adults at the mercy of their terms of service. It's little wonder Meta had been asking the US government for this type of regulation for over a decade. And if all that wasn't enough, not just misuse of private data: A general rule about data is the more you put it out there, the more likely it will be stolen. There is an increased risk of identity theft here also. This is not the same as showing ID before going into a bar - that bar doesn't store your ID in a database. Sorry for the rant.

@leftylabourtech @pluralistic As someone autistic who loves using social media to connect with others like me, this was really concerning. I wrote letters to my MLA and MP.

@leftylabourtech @pluralistic This is disappointing. My feeling is that Kinew is jumping on a bandwagon.

@leftylabourtech @pluralistic I dunno. I'm not a fan of proprietary for-profit social media; so, I'm in favour of anything that limits its use. I notice in discussions of the issue that people often claim that big tech (IE, Meta) "had been asking the US government for this type of regulation". However, no proof is ever given of this dubious claim (dubious, I feel, because big business rarely asks to be regulated, especially if the goal of such regulation is to curtail use of its product by a segment of the population, which is the case here). So, I looked it up and found a BBC article on the subject of Australia's law. It states, "social media companies were aghast when the ban was first announced in November 2024." "aghast" suggests, contrary to the claims of the various freedom fighters online, that big social media companies were not begging for this regulation to happen. Regarding Manitoba, I did look up their current bills, but as yet I don't see it. I think they've yet to draw it up. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cwyp9d3ddqyo https://web2.gov.mb.ca/bills/43-3/index.php
