One of the things I’ve never successfully internalised is how basically our entire society and my personal future in the form of savings and pensions is based on gambling and abject speculation. At this point it’s pretty clear that the stock market is completely detached from reality and driven by vibes. Most of our pensions depend on the fantasy that FAANG type stocks can and will continue to grow forever. Hell we even have “prediction markets” which are obviously just betting shops dodging regulation by self-identifying as financial products. We have billionaires talking about destroying 50% of all white collar jobs and the establishment is cheering. They talk about UBI while at the same time it’s been made obvious that any redistribution of wealth will need to be over their cold, dead bodies (not endorsing violence, just a figure of speech). I truly miss the times when people at least pretended that “freedom” wasn’t just about speculation and corruption.
