I made it! It was pretty cool. The techs (Eduardo & Charmain) were cool. Eduardo had a Snorlax(!!!) lanyard. The earplugs and headphones they gave me were adequate. I was nervous at first, but found it cozy actually. But maybe that's the 1mg Lorazepam (SL) talking. :3 Cool facts: - The MRI machine's magnets are rated at 3 Teslas (30,000 Gauss) - The machine had concentric rings painted onto the floor around it, with labels (5 Gauss, 100 Gauss, etc.) as you got closer - The call button they gave me was PNEUMATIC :D - The headphones they used to talk to me were also, somehow, pneumatic. This seems so novel and weird and I really want to learn how these work!! Questions for the audience: - Do the magnets interact with the trace ferrous minerals in body in any meaningful way?

@tty First off, and I'm sure they warn you too: It uses very strong magnets. So you need to not have anything on or in you susceptible to those. It is noisy. I choose to interpret it as a form of industrial music Last I checked, youtube had MRI sounds videos, if you want to set expectations. It can also be quite snug. One thing I really like is that they are super safe, compared to say X-ray techniques that you can (in principle) get too much of.

@tty if you suffer from claustrophobia, it’s best to keep your eyes closed from the moment you lie down on the examination table. I didn’t think I was claustrophobic, but I made the mistake of opening my eyes and was on the verge of having a panic attack. Luckily (I’ve had two mri), one time I tilted my head back and I could see that the tube was open and I calmed down. The next time, they put a sort of helmet on me with a mirror that let me see outside. The noise is very loud, but I found it bearable.

@tty In the UK they gave me ear defenders... even with them it sounded like some unknown period (probably 10 mins) of alien abduction chirping. If you don't suffer from claustrophobia then that will help... just try to stay still and follow audio instructions that they will relay to you.

@tty It’s a snug tube (diameter similar to a pipe/tunnel slide on a playground) and sounded like mechanical whirring and wood blocks clapping around while it was on when I had scans a few years back. Very safe technology and helpful detailed imagery results. When I had it done, the sensor parts of the tube spin around you. Loud and a bit claustrophobic, but painless and cool, medically helpful technology. Hope this helps and well-wishes on your healing journey.

@tty you will have to lay perfectly still for however long they tell you, possibly longer, so make sure you get comfortable *before* they start. they always get mad at me if they see me slightly shifting partway through 😭 this is especially hard for me with my chronic pain, and also likely for folks who can't sit still for other reasons. take pain meds or whatever helps, and make sure to let them know beforehand in case there are interactions with the contrast meds (if applicable)!

@tty My special interest is music. Including absurd, microtonal, atonal and noise music. It was a little bit too loud and a little bit too long but the variety of sounds was amazing. I also had to think about the fact that an analog mechanism can hold the tempo that greatly. And headphones. Headphones also helped. They offered me headphones. I said no to music but had an extra filter.

@tty It doesn't hurt, but it is very loud, and the 'tunnel' can feel a bit confining. But close your eyes and relax, and you'll be done v. soon. 👍 #AuDHD
