Every month it seems like another YT channel I follow in tech replaces the human voice backing videos with a cloned AI voice. Makes me wonder at what point in the past they went all-in on generated scripts. (It's not all bad, if someone is still at the helm who actually cares. But overall quality declines.)

@geerlingguy@mastodon.social Scripts would also mean good subtitles and therefore good translated subtitles. I might even appreciate the AI voice, when it otherwise would be a tough accent or rough audio. When you say generated scripts, you mean AI generated?

@geerlingguy@mastodon.social YT views and payout has also been cratering recently, hasn't it? I can understand that creators look for ways to reduce operating costs to return to profitable status, but reducing the quality of their content might just further reduce viewer numbers.

@geerlingguy@mastodon.social I actually stop subscribing to any accounts where I notice this happening, regardless of whether there is a human still driving the ship or not. There are too many other channels that I subscribe to who benefit more, literally, or hare armed by my attention or inattenion. I would rather spend my limited time on them.

@geerlingguy@mastodon.social Generated content is the majority of what is now on YouTube. If I don't see a human speaking on camera and making mistakes, I hit "Don't Recommend Channel" and "Dislike".

@geerlingguy@mastodon.social and you get AI-translated AI-voices. Unbearingly creepy, weird and useless (for me). Me, as a German, watching English videos is fine, aside from some jokes I should get most of it. But the getting some really weird translation is just 🤢. And then you have to dive into the options and try to turn it off again.
